We must be very careful when browsing and downloading content on our mobile phone if we do not want to see how a virus takes over the system. Cybercriminals are experts in their field and are increasingly finding smarter ways to access users’ personal data. The last of it is one of the most common practices, but that does not mean you have to walk with less temperance.
Many of us tend to think that the Google Play Store is an extremely safe place given the security functions established by the Internet giant, although there are times when they manage to overcome the barrier, and there are more than you think. malware known as Harly camouflages himself in applications seemingly harmless to surprise the user later, this is how the virus works and everything you need to know.
Be careful with Android apps
The Google app store is a place full of programs of all kinds and for this reason it is easier than it seems to hide a malicious app inside. Specifically, the Harly virus has been introduced into over 190 apps that have been replicated by the attackers to insert this malware.
The affected programs are part of different categories within the Play Store and it ranges from a simple minigame to a flashlight app. According to data collected by Kaspersky, users would have downloaded Apps infected by Harly up to 4.8 million timesso you can get an idea of the danger it hides.
The procedure followed by the virus to steal your money is next. Once you download and install the app on your mobile, Harly begins to obtain information about the device you are using, giving priority to the network. Then, the smartphone changes network to access a server generated by the attacker.
At this point, Harly compiles a list of subscriptions and fill in the data with which you have extracted previously from our phone. Now, through invisible windows, the system starts paying subscriptions without sending any notice to the user. This means that you will only be able to find out if you check your bank account or by taking a look at the invoice at the end of the month.
What to do to avoid the virus
No matter how careful you are, there is a possibility of falling victim to a malware attack without realizing it, as these malicious applications hide behind official-looking programs. So all you can do is always stay tuned and check the opinions of users both in the Google Play Store itself and on the Internet or forums.
On the other hand, it is important not to download third-party applications that do not come from unknown platforms. Kaspersky advises that if you detect anomalies on your smartphone, it is best to uninstall recently installed applications through the settings. The problem is that there is no list with all the apps affected, although here are some of them:
- Pony Camera
- Live Wallpaper&Themes Launcher
- Action Launcher & Wallpapers
- Color Call
- Good Launcher
- Mondy Widgets
- Funcalls-Voice Changer
- Eve Launcher
